EUROSTAR SUPERLOCK project confirms progress done on “Safe and Sustainable by Design” concept
There is significant stress put on European markets and OEMs to achieve Safety and Sustainability by design (SSbD) targets (Publications Office).
The SUPERLOCK consortium is aligned with SSbD by offering an alternative to disposable batteries used in Smart Building applications like door locks, supporting elimination of harmful chemical-based energy storage elements.
High-quality collaboration and sharing-of-minds at the heart of the consortium enables such quality outcomes.
Supercapacitor technology of nanoCaps, combined with OMET/Ribestech Organic PV and e-peas PMIC enables Dormakaba application to be self-powered under constrained environment. System simulation by NRGeer confirms successful design concepts and path forward.
Antonio Iacchetti, responsible for OMET/Ribestech printed electronics activities, states: “Joining such a diverse and highly competent design team to develop an ambitious solution was a great experience. It is sometimes difficult to fully realize the true value offered by the printed photovoltaic technology developed by OMET/Ribestech. On the contrary, the results achieved in SUPERLOCK demonstrate the effectiveness of a holistic approach to the development of energy-harvesting systems. The co-design of the various components allowed us to push the minimum illumination threshold required to power the system even lower, while the design freedom offered by our technology was fully leveraged, ensuring innovative solutions that optimize integration with the supercapacitor and the PMIC.”
SUPERLOCK mission statement shows feasibility of a Maintenance-free Electronic Door Lock demonstrator, powered only from Indoor Ambient light, and innovative Super capacitor based upon carbon nanotube electrodes, making the system completely lithium-free, fully autonomous within a Standard Lock form factor and an innovative PMIC architecture.
